All set for Semester 1 2022, the new student accommodation facility at Curtin University's Exchange Precinct has officially welcomed its first students.

The 10-storey, 517-bed Twin Dolphin Hall opened on January 17, and neighbouring St Catherine’s College tower will be opening February 19. The student accommodation buildings will be supported by the Nesuto Curtin 60-room boutique hotel and 38 self-contained apartments and will soon have a grocery store and other food and beverage outlets.

TBB have been working in collaboration with the project team including Curtin University, Christou Design, John Wardle Architects, Nettletontribe and Six Degrees to progress the necessary planning approvals for Exchange, Curtin University’s first dedicated industry-connected innovation precinct.

A place to meet, learn, work and live, where people come first.

The Exchange precinct comprises four buildings:

  1. College & Outdoor Common Room
  2. Halls of Residence 1, Grocer, Retail, Office
  3. School of Design and Built Environment
  4. Hotel, Apartments, Retail & Education Space

The vision for the precinct is to integrate Curtin’s best educational and research offerings with an enviable urban lifestyle, in a sustainable place where everything is available and connected.

In December 2018, the Metropolitan Central Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) granted approval of the four sites with a construction value estimated at $500 million. Securing development approval was regarded as a significant milestone for the project under what can be regarded as a highly complex planning framework involving the Town of Victoria Park, WAPC, JDAP and Curtin University. A process of active engagement and collaboration by the team from the outset, ensured a streamlined approvals process. TBB’s involvement continued to the post-approvals phase relating to the provision of advice to Curtin University and related parties with regards to ongoing design modifications, amended development applications and implementation processes.
