Cambridge Local Planning Strategy

The Local Planning Strategy for the Town provided a balance between urban intensification and the retention of the existing character and amenity.

The Goal

As an inner metropolitan local government the Town has a huge diversity in its built form, land use, movement network and natural environments. These assets combine to create a highly functional urban area that is an attractive place to live, work and invest.

Retaining these key attributes, whilst also accommodating the population growth prescribed by the WAPC’s Perth & Peel @ 3.5 million, is a substantial challenge for the Town moving into the future. This challenge can only be addressed with well considered and comprehensive strategic planning.

Our Role

To ensure that comprehensive community and stakeholder engagement was achieved in preparing the draft Local Planning Strategy, TBB, along with the Town’s planning team, prepared articles to be placed in the local newspaper and online engagement through Engagement HQ in order to ensure the community were well informed of the Local Planning Strategy process.

TBB prepared and facilitated several community and stakeholder consultation events. Engagement strategies included the preparation of community surveys, Councillor workshops, postal mail out, community open days, meetings with stakeholder groups and preparation of an Engagement Strategy Report.

TBB prepared, with managed inputs for the multiple consultants, a cutting-edge strategy which set the vision for the Town for the next 10-15 years in terms of land use, development capacity, movement network and infrastructure requirements, public realm and open space requirements and built form characteristics and typologies.

The Outcome

The draft Local Planning Strategy was finalised in 2019 after extensive community engagement, and was formally advertised in March 2020. The Strategy provides a clear and well reasoned approach to long term strategic planning which considers local character, community values and aligns with the State Government planning framework. The Strategy will provide the basis for the Planning Scheme review and development guidance.
