The Goal

The redevelopment of the Wearne Aged Care, situated in a prime coastal location in Cottesloe, into a landmark care and residential development for Perth’s senior community represents the very best of urban development. This high-end project delivered a mix of independent living units and residential aged care rooms, as well as associated amenities, cafe and allied health services. The staged delivery of the project catered for staged decant and demolition of a portion of the existing facility on the site.

Our Role

Taylor Burrell Barnett was appointed the statutory planner and community engagement specialist responsible for implementing a Structure Plan; Masterplan; Development Application and community engagement process for the development of this historic site.

A significant component of this project was responding to the community and social needs of residents. This was balanced with an appreciation for the high demand for aged care facilities within the area and the substantial upgrades needed to meet contemporary aged care expectations. TBB’s engagement team led extensive community and stakeholder consultation for both Visioning and Design Scenario Workshops, with the final result being a shared vision for the design for the redevelopment.

The Outcome

The TBB-led community and stakeholder engagement processes resulted in the establishment of key values, identified opportunities to be considered during the redevelopment, as well as established draft design principles to guide the design scenarios. TBB also led Statutory and Strategic Planning processes, representing the Client during key advocacy negotiations with the Towns of Cottesloe, Claremont and Mosman Park and the Shire of Peppermint Grove.

The site features Marine Views Cottesloe, a 128-suite state-of-the-art residential aged care home incorporating design and technology innovations from around the world, and Waterfront Cottesloe, which includes 76 luxurious independent living apartments with thoughtfully designed shared spaces.

Marine Views Cottesloe officially opened November 2021.
