Bunbury Outer Harbour

Bunbury Outer Harbour

Bunbury Outer Harbour is a major strategic government project, looking to build on the success of the Marlston Hill and City centre Revitalisation Projects to create a world class working harbour destination on the City’s doorstep.

The joint commitment of the Bunbury City Council and State Government to deliver the City Vision involving port redevelopment, foreshore tourism, boating facilities and transit based urbanism, is the catalyst for the development objectives.

The Outer Harbour is superfluous to the Port Authorities requirements and the future relocation of the industrial and port activity and boat facilities provides a unique opportunity to reclaim the waterfront back into Bunbury’s urban fabric and regain full public access to the extensive foreshores and beaches. The Bunbury Outer Harbour is intended to provide a mix of contemporary retail, café/restaurant and commercial uses on ground floor and a range of upper floor apartments. Taylor Burrell Barnett’s involvement has enabled the harbour to transform from an ageing industrial site to a high quality mixed-use waterside development.

Key challenges included the coordination and prioritisation of stakeholder objectives in order to deliver public equity and dealing with the scale and expanse of the project in order to deliver a staged and cohesive project. The provision of mixed use development was vital in achieving various objectives including creation of a 24 hour cultural, commercial, tourism and retail hub and economic returns and employment opportunities to the Bunbury community.

The Bunbury Waterfront Masterplan is evolving in a timely way through public and stakeholder involvement, design innovation and testing, as well as through the application of world’s best practice. The redevelopment takes full advantage of the spectacular maritime setting, maximising the City’s interface with the water’s edge and opportunities to create a major waterfront destination for Bunbury.
